Research Notes:One of McMaster University Library's treasures is a fine folio copy of the Liber Chronicarum Figuris, known as the Nurember Chronicle. This world history, written by Hartmann Scheldel, was printed in Nuremberg by anthomus Koberger in 1493. This magnificent work, which is in extremely fine condition, contains some 1,800 woodcuts (many repeats), and the evident beauty of its design and printing has made this rare item a landmark in printing as well as in cultural history. The Nurember Chronicle was probably the most ambitious publishing venture of the fifteenth century. The range of the woodcuts both in size and subject is remarkable: they include the Creation and many other Biblical subjects, portraits of saints and historical figures, and city views. This copy is in Latin but there were also copies printed in German. Our copy has been restored and rebound in a contemporary binding by the Library's former preservation specialist, John Holmes.
