Research Notes:Perhaps the most famous medieval cathedral is Notre Dame, located on an island in the Seine river in Paris. Built in several stages, it took almost 200 year to complete. Begun in 1163 by Maurice de Sulli, Bishop of Paris, Notre Dame was to be the greatest monument created by man to honour God. The good bishop obviously did not live to see the full completion of his dream. However, what he set in motion was the creation of a spiritually and a visually stunning masterpiece. By the time of its completion in 1345, Notre Dame was, and perhaps still is the greatest of the medieval cathedrals. Dedicated, as was Chartres, to the Virgin Mary, it stands as a spiritual mecca of western Christendom.
