Research Notes:15/08/00Destroyed by fire in 1194, the remnants of the old style Romanesque cathedral were rebuilt using innovative techniques to create the masterpiece of the Gothic cathedral. Chartres was the first Cathedral built in the High Gothic Style. Consecrated in 1260, Chartres is the first cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is 112 feet tall and 427 feet long. Elegant flying buttresses, towering arcade and massive celestory, make Chartres a marvel of medieval technological innovation.
