Notes1:Summer, with peasants harvesting and an alldgorical figure of the season decorated with ears of corn. The best period is early in the year an its effect is to dissolve superfluities. However, it can hinder the digestion because of bile.

Research Notes:TheTacuinum Sanitatis is one of the supreme picture books of the Middle Ages, 'illustrating scenes fro daily life of the court and country, for the pleasuer of a lay audience' (B. Whittoft, The Tacuinum Sanitatis : A Lombard's Panorama, 'Gesta' XVII, 1978, p.50). The miniatures shown here depict housewives in their daily chores in the kitchen, garden, as well as other aspects of medieval life not generally recorded.
